Shepherd’s Tale

Musings of a small-town Missouri Methodist pastor

Finally…I am BACK!

Howdy, folks.

I know it seems like it’s been AGES since I’ve blogged on here…and, in fact, it has. Almost ten months has went by since I have written anything except for sermons and the occasional piece in the local paper or The Missouri Conference Review. Things here have been more than busy; swamped would be a better word.

So what has went on for almost the past year? Administration of the parish has been a big part, with a new church restart at Purdin (now named New Life Church) being the biggest and most time-consuming piece. Roofing the church building is almost complete; then comes the interior renovation and exterior landscaping. After that, it’s time to prepare weeknight worship experiences, with a possible soft opening on Christmas Eve!

This servant of God has learned so much from New Life’s work-in-progress…mostly, it’s about how God works in His own time and not in ours. I was so gung-ho about getting stuff completed in a certain time frame, and it was amazing how the roadblocks kept coming up; and then, when I gave it entirely to the Lord to work out, things just fell into place: the finances, the volunteer-in-mission teams, etc.

What a valuable lesson to be learned in all of this! Thanks, God, for Your enduring patience, grace, mercy, and love.

More updates VERY soon…and that’s a promise I intend to keep!   :)

My Inauguration Thoughts

I can only imagine that this post will not be well-liked by many, especially those who favor now-President Obama and his policies/thoughts.

First off: to spend $170 million of taxpayers money on an inauguration event is simply and unequivocally wrong. After all the sound bites about how we are to be fiscally responsible, our President opens wide the gates of our Treasury and spends freely and foolishly.

My question: could it have been perhaps a tad bit more toned down? Certainly. Could we have not reined in the organizers and said, “This is the total amount we can use on the Inauguration, and nothing more.” Why, sure we could have!

Secondly, the speech was muted and restrained, which fit in nicely with the times at hand. However, it is something we have heard many times before from President Obama when he was busy on the campaign trail. Rhetoric is one thing; tired and overused rhetoric is another.

Folks, we needed something inspiring; uplifting; and that focused on what we need in government the most–and that’s God.

Sure, Obama used one piece of scripture, and he didn’t quote it correctly, but paraphrased it instead to fit his message. And, he gave five shout-outs to God in his speech, but they were the same usually bits that politicians use like “God-given.” Safe, reassuring stuff that may sound good…but is the true meaning there?

I, for one, was disappointed with the pomp and circumstance…and I came away from viewing this historic moment with some unease.

As I saw the vast sea of humanity gathered to see Obama take his oath and hear his speech, God spoke these words to me…”Would they come to hear the Lord speak to the His children? Would they be willing to listen to Me?”

That, my friends, opened my eyes to many spiritual truths…that I will share later on.

Decisions, Decisions…

So many things are happening at the churches where I serve; we are in the midst of repairing the downstairs basement walls at Bear Branch, repairing the roof at Purdin, and trying to look ahead at Pleasant Grove and build a handicapped accessible ramp for the front doors. Plus, we are planning on holding a Confirmation Class parish-wide, as well as Disciple 1 and 2 classes, also throughout the entire parish. And, this weekend we are having an organizational meeting for our Purdin area youth group.

And, of course, we have just started our Wednesday evening prayer and praise services; last week we had 16 attending at the parsonage. This week, James and Jean Montgomery are hosting it at their house north of Brookfield.

I think back a little under two years ago, when our District Superintendent, Bill Koch, told me that I would be the new pastor at Bear Branch and Purdin. Then, in November 2007, he also informed me that I would be taking the reins at Pleasant Grove UMC to make it a three-point charge. Wow. I was excited, scared, nervous…all sorts of emotions ran through my head.

And now, I can look back and see how much of a blessing this charge has been in our lives; I would have never dreamed that we would be able to accomplish all that we have: an area-wide tent revival, a blending together of the three churches, an ice cream social, a Disciple 1 class, a very large donation to five area ministries…yes, I am proud of these people who have spiritually grown so much in the Lord.

Ad then…I think about what other things we can do for the Lord and His kingdom, and it excites me to new heights! Wow! The world is our parish, and there are souls to be saved, and countless others to be ministered to.

So, I give a great thanks to the Lord our God, for this journey He has given to my family and I. It’s been fun; nerve-wracking; crazy; and many other words…but most of all, it’s been a real testimony in the lives of those who we serve for the Lord in this parish.

So, there are even more decisions to be made, and choices to be looked at…but through and through, we can truly say that we are making disciples for Jesus Christ!

Blessings to all!

New Wednesday Evening Service!

We have been blessed this new year in starting a prayer and praise service for the entire parish; it all kicks off this evening at 6:30PM at the parsonage.

We’ll be singing hymns, reading prayers, and lifting up those who need healing, comfort, and peace in their lives. It will be a time to come together and get a little spiritual “boost” to make it through the rest of the week.

I am excited about the growth I have seen in the membership of all three churches. It has taken a lot of hard work, prayer, and seeking God’s face, but I truly believe we are at the threshold of some mighty works for God’s Kingdom.

Please pray that this service will be a blessing to both God and our congregations!

Keeping Up My Blog

I’ve decided to try something else, since I spend a good amount of time on Facebook now…and that is to mirror my pastor’s blog here and update it more often from the Facebook page.

Let me know what you think and if you like it.

Blessings!!

A New Journey….

Just to let everyone know, please pray for me as I embark on a brand new journey on January 1st; I will be setting aside a few hours a day to write a story that I have been trying to put on pen and paper for many years…and that is my autobiography. Not for fame or fortune, but for a lasting legacy for my wife and children.

Telling about some of my experiences doesn’t do it justice; I really need to flesh it out in a way that needs to be said. And I have been encouraged by many to do just that.

So, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to finally embark on that painful journey I once lived, and to tell other people about the remarkable saving Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. A Grace and Love that set me free from 16 years of drug and alcohol abuse on May 5, 1989…and my life has never been the same since.

I have given myself a year to complete this project, at which time I will be contacting several printers to see about putting it out on paperback to give to my family and friends.

Pleas pray that God’s will would be done in this endeavor.   :)

Come Worship with Us!

Tomorrow AM at 10:30 Jeannie and I will be leading services at Freedom Baptist Church in Brookfield; since it’s 5th Sunday, I’m off from my regular pastorate at the three churches we serve, and Pastor Ron Adrian at Freedom graciously asked us to fill in.

We’re excited to be praising God among our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. We plan on singing a few congregational songs, then go right into some Casting Crowns and Mercy Me music, among others. Then, I’ll be opening up God’s Word and preaching from Luke 21 for the 1st Sunday in Advent.

If you’re in the area, please come join us as we worship the living God! Freedom Baptist is located on Highway 36 east just past Smith Motor Co. That’s about 2 miles east of Brookfield!

Hope to see you there!

Something Else To Do!

My wife Jeannie (she of the blog that gets updated a whole lot more frequently than my two blogs) is a book reviewer for Thomas Nelson Publishers; I thought I’d bite the bullet too and go ahead and sign up.

I will be reviewing my first product as soon as I receive it in the mail; it is an audio New Testament in MP3 format with today’s modern teen actors/actresses supplying the voices. It’s called the “Word of Promise Next Generation – New Testament.”

Here’s a link to the site.

I’ll let you know how that pans out. It will be rather interesting to hear another translation of the NT for teens. Myself, I prefer the NIV or KJV. I’d love to get my hands on audio MP3’s or CD’s of either one of those to listen to on my iPhone…free, of course. :)

The New Moral Majority

Well, the elections are over, and we now have a new President-elect in the wings, ready to take office on January 20, 2009. Our Congress, more than ever, is now tipping the scales towards the Democrats way; and everything is ripe for a huge change to come out of Washington, D.C.

Whether or not this will be change for the good…only time will tell.

Regardless of your political affiliation, Christians all around this great nation of ours must band together; stay the course; and make our voices be heard over these next four years. This will be a time of massive upheavals in our country as our new leaders try to institute their own agendas; agendas where pro-abortion laws, same-sex marriage amendments, and embryonic stem cell research funding boosts will top the list.

This is why it is so important for us to be as the “voice of one crying out in the wilderness.” If we just lie down and take it, then we, as one nation under God, are doomed. But if we take the initiative to do such things as march on Washington; or speak out against these things in our states capitols, etc…that will be noticed. And appreciated by other Christians.

And perhaps our nation’s leaders will take heart…and listen.

So, I am drafting up a plan: and that plan is to start afresh with a new “Moral Majority”; an all-volunteer Christian organization that would stand up against those things which are against God and His Kingdom; the immoral, unjust, unethical; and the nonspiritual. It can be done; God’s Will can be accomplished here on this earth; and this nation can once again become great in His eyes…a shining Light for all the world to see.

Would you join me? Pray about this; ask God what you can do to help. For more information, please e-mail me at willingservants@gmail.com

A Day Like No Other

It’s Election Day, my friends. And because of that, I am attaching my monthly column that I write for the Linn County Leader newspaper here in north Missouri; it speaks of how we need God back in our nation. It was published in yesterday’s edition, just in time for the elections. Praise God!

You can read it directly below.

Pray for our United States of America, brothers and sisters. We are indeed in uncertain times.

November 2008 Linn County Leader Column – “United We Stand…for God”

Well, folks, this is it! Tomorrow we will vote to elect a new leader for our nation; a person who will guide our consolidated union of fifty states forward into a time of uncertainty, looming recession, and declining ethical and moral values in our world. Each vote is important; each vote matters; and everyone’s voices need to be heard in this important matter.

As a pastor, I cannot stand in the pulpits where I serve and lecture my congregations on whom they need to cast their ballots for; that is unethical as well as illegal (according to IRS regulations for churches that hold a tax-exempt status; this has been in effect since 1954). People also hold fast to the long disputed idea of separation of church and state as the Founding Fathers of our nation ascribed to; one of the staunchest defenders of this framework was James Madison, also known as the “Father of the Constitution”. He is most recognized as quoting the following about the subject: “Every new and successful example, therefore, of a perfect separation between the ecclesiastical and civil matters, is of importance; and I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and Government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together (Letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822).” Or, to break in down in simpler terms: Madison believed that the two subjects did not need to interact with each other that much; the more they did, the more muddled things became and the more at odds people would be with one another.

Now, don’t get me wrong about this! I really believe that we need to have a foundational aspect to our government; a cornerstone on which to gauge everything from a pure moral and spiritual standpoint. And that can really only be with God. Because the great leaders of our nation’s history understood that if we didn’t have anything on which to base the creation of this great nation on, then things would really melt down in a hurry. There would be chaos without focus; instead of a coming together, this nation would have blown apart at the seams. And, to put it bluntly, that great stabilizing influence was (and continues to be for those who choose to accept) our Father in heaven.

John Adams put it best when he said, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Or this quote, on the day that the Declaration of Independence was approved by Congress: “The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principals of Christianity… I will avow that I believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

So, one might ask, “What in the world does this have to do with our presidential election coming up?” My friends, it has EVERYTHING to do with it! We were, and still are, a nation founded under God. We’re supposed to be indivisible; unbreakable; unshakeable; even in the midst of turmoil at home, or even in the world. And, yet, we have strayed far from the original intentions of those who wanted this nation to be a shining light for others to see; a hope for a globe at war with itself. Instead, we are a people split apart; divided among ourselves; and it is so prevalent in this election cycle. We have the major candidates slinging mud at each other and their respective parties; it’s all about looking good no matter what the cost.

My question is: Where are the issues that we need for them to discuss? It’s not about sound bites for the mass media; there are real problems with our economy, our justice system, and with our nation as a whole. There is still racism, hatred, and mayhem all around us, and we are doing nothing to solve them. We would rather gloss it over with nice-sounding “themes” of economic stimulus packages or creating new jobs for America than face the music–the song lyrics that tell us that all is not right in our country.

I do agree with both McCain and Obama on one very important thing, and it’s the underlying riptide that we are facing in the United States.

We need change.

Change in a big way.

But we don’t need the kind of change with more taxes, or bigger government, or cutting back retirement benefits for those who deserve it, or even change achieved through socialized medicine. The kind of change I’m talking about doesn’t come out of a bill passed through Congress; or a law put into practice after being signed on the president’s desk. It’s not the kind of change that can be switched on and off like a light bulb, dark and foreboding one moment, and then shining brightly the next.

No…the kind of change we need is from a spiritual aspect, like the Founding Fathers knew we needed so desperately at the creation of our country. It’s a change that occurs within the hearts of men and women when they turn from their wicked ways, and pray, and seek His face. A change that will heal our land and pull together the torn fabric of our society; a change that will show us how to love our neighbors as ourselves and do unto others as you would have them do unto you; a change that doesn’t come from the will of man but entirely from the will of God.

One last quote; this one is from Thomas Jefferson. He wrote, “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever.”

Folks, the change has to start by admitting to ourselves that we need God in our land; and then allowing Him to be Lord over everything in our lives.

As a people; and as one nation.

Under God.

Please vote for the person tomorrow who will do the same.
